help me

I need some fiction recommendations. I've got tons of nonfiction on the go right now but I need a good pretend story. Sorry Erika, I tried reading the Seventh Son, but I couldn't get into it. I have some books that I own that I want to read but I'm saving those for when I'm going to a country that has an inferior library system for six months. So if anyone has any good fiction to tell me about, bring it on. I'm gonna milk the library for all it's worth in the next two months.

these were my two recent reads...

the lovely bones and the red tent.

i liked both for very different reasons. the red tent is fiction based on dinah from the bible. it is a very woman centered novel, which i liked. the lovely bones was interesting because it is in the voice of a girl who has been murdered. she watches how her family is impacted etc.

i have also really liked the secret life of bees, a fine balance (depressing but very rich writing) and many years ago I read the giver which was science fiction but very interesting. it is a young adult novel but makes you think.

i read the lovely bones and the secret life of bees. the lovely bones had some parts in it that really bothered me and i wish i hadn't read it. i loved the secret life of bees though. it should make a good movie someday.
i will try the red tent or the giver...
thanks aisy!

Mom is reading mostly fantasy and ya fantasy these days so she could not think of anything at this time. These are my fav non-genre books they are not new and have been filmed but if you have seen the film but not read the books please give the books a chance they are so much better.
Where the heart is by Billie Letts
Fried Green Tomatoes by Fanny Flagg
and since you are going to Mexico you should read
Like water for chocolate by Laura Esquivel

excellent, thanks dagga. i will get "like water for chocolate".
by the way aisy, i started "the giver" and i really like it. i recognized the author, right away from some books i read when i was younger. one of my favorite books is "number the stars" and that was by her. it's a young adult novel so it's quite short but i highly recommend it. it's about a danish girl who protects and helps her jewish friend in nazi occupied denmark.

i have "the good earth" by pearl s. buck but haven't read it yet. i googled her and she seems pretty impressive in all that she has done. it's funny i always thought she was a man. pearl is so obviously a female name but the whole name together, i grew up thinking it was a man. i don't know why.
