i just finnished reading my new favorite book, "Roots" by Alex Haley (as seen on the left on the set of the film based on the book) the reasons why i liked it is because i also detested it. the historical refrences were very accurate and the treatment of slaves was brutal. the hardships of the family were disgusting. I liked it because Haley had the chance to research his ansestors based on an oral history passed down seven generations to keep his ansestors' memories alive. this kind of family unity and respect has gained my upmost admiration. i want to do the same for my family. my heart is turned.

I have not read Roots but I remember the tv series from when I was a kid, I don´t think I could read the book although it seems amazing, I´m going for light reading these days, somthing funny and unrealistic.

yeah i always have mixed feelings when i read or see stories about slavery. its sad and angering. i have a hard time watching it but at the same time i feel like i should know what happened.

it was gross, and there was ligitimate blame on the white community if the time, but i think it is important to understand why there is still prejudism today especially in the southern states. If we adopt black children, which i hope we will, i think it will help them understand their world a bit more. I have a deep attraction to africa for some reason.

I havent read Roots yet but it's wes' favorite book. Have any of you guys read "Uncle Tom's Cabin"? it's also about slavery and and was written in the 1800's. it's interesting the way they thought, back while slavery was still happening. i like reading old books because people thought so much differently then than we do. anyway, i really loved it, and i've read it twice, even though its really long. you might find it hard to get into and i kinda hated it the entire time i was reading it, but the end , in my opinion anyway, makes it all worth it. i hope i will read Roots soon.
